Invasion of cooperative parasites in moderately structured host populations

چکیده

Certain defence mechanisms of phages against the immune system their bacterial host rely on cooperation phages. Motivated by this example we analyse invasion probabilities cooperative parasites in moderately structured populations. We assume that hosts occupy vertices a configuration model and offspring move to neighbouring sites infect new hosts. Parasites (usually) reproduce only when infecting simultaneously then generate many offspring. In regime identify spatial scale population structure at which turns from being an unlikely highly probable event.

Parasites destabilize host populations by shifting stage-structured interactions.

Should parasites stabilize or destabilize consumer-resource dynamics? Recent theory suggests that parasite-enhanced mortality may confer underappreciated stability to their hosts. We tested this hypothesis using disease in zooplankton. Across both natural and experimental epidemics, bigger epidemics correlated with larger--not smaller--host fluctuations. Thus, we tested two mechanistic hypothes...

Extinction Effect of Parasites on Host Populations

Experimental studies have shown that parasites can reduce host density and even drive host population to extinction. Existing mathematical models for parasite-host interactions, while can address the host density reduction scenario, fail to explain such deterministic extinction phenomena. In order to understand the parasite induced host extinction, Ebert et al. (2000) formulated a plausible but...

The Spread of Fecally Transmitted Parasites in Socially-Structured Populations

Mammals are infected by a wide array of gastrointestinal parasites, including parasites that also infect humans and domesticated animals. Many of these parasites are acquired through contact with infectious stages present in soil, feces or vegetation, suggesting that ranging behavior will have a major impact on their spread. We developed an individual-based spatial simulation model to investiga...

Fast-killing parasites can be favoured in spatially structured populations

It is becoming increasingly clear that the evolution of infectious disease is influenced by host population structure. Theory predicts that parasites should be more 'prudent'-less transmissible-in spatially structured host populations. However, here we (i) highlight how low transmission, the phenotype being selected for in this in context, may also be achieved by rapacious host exploitation, if...
